Blueberry Season: A Taste of Nova Scotia Summer

2 min read

One of the best things about living in Nova Scotia right now is having so many fresh blueberries.

Eating food when it’s in season feels special. It tastes better, is often grown nearby, and helps us eat in tune with our surroundings. This matches the Blue Zones approach: choosing mostly whole, plant-based foods and enjoying what’s fresh and local.

Right now, you can find blueberries everywhere.

This recipe came to me through one of my Tamarindo Jam friends, Carla Rowlings. Thank you, Carla! After tasting these muffins, I knew I wanted to make my own version. They are that wonderful combination we are always looking for: nutritious and delicious.

Why I Love Blueberries

Blueberries are small, but they have a lot to offer.

They are full of antioxidants, especially anthocyanins, which give blueberries their deep blue colour.

They also contain fibre, which supports digestion and makes meals and snacks more filling.

Blueberries have vitamin C and other nutrients that support our health.

Best of all, they are naturally sweet, colourful, and easy to add to foods like oatmeal, yogurt, salads, smoothies, and muffins.

The LLOC Connection

Mind: Slow down and notice the pleasure of preparing something simple and nourishing.

Body: Pick foods that are good for you, like colourful fruits, whole grains, and other foods in their natural state.

Heart: Food brings people together. Make a batch for someone you care about, invite a friend for coffee, or share some muffins with a neighbour.

Spirit: Enjoy the season's abundance. There’s something grounding about eating what grows near us, right now.

For me, healthy living isn’t about being perfect. It’s about making choices that nourish us and enjoying the food, people, and moments that make life good.

A warm blueberry muffin with a good cup of coffee definitely fits into that picture.

How will you rise today?
